I Feel Like Celebrating...

My toes have been tapping, my voice has been singing, and I find that I have more to give than usual; more smiles, more love. In other words, I feel like celebrating.

This past year I've been working one one one with Jen, a mentor/teacher/spiritual advisor/all around bad ass sister who has, and I won't say "held the space" because  I'm really tired of that expression; as my real estate obsessed husband  phrased it: "she held the square footage" for  tremendous and at times (is this a run-on? sorry Mrs. Lamb my 5th grade teacher) subtle shifts which have led me to where I am today. Happy.

Her big message is: celebrate. Celebrate how far you've come in small ways and in big ways. It could be as simple as today I didn't judge myself, or I didn't react, etc.. To delve into all the things I've learned through our work together would  take too long and you'd be bored, so in the spirit of brevity I'll sum it up by saying I simply love myself more. Not based on merit, or how much I have in my back account. Not based on what you say or do not say, or how you behave towards me (you meaning the whole world).

And what i'm finding is that from this new perspective, I can now clearly see the difference between when you (meaning the world, ahem possibly my dear sweet loving amazing husband:), are projecting your c%#p onto me and when I need to look at the mirror you're presenting and take responsibility for my c%#p. Without judgement or criticism. With more tolerance and humility.

And look. I'm not saying I'M THERE. I still react, and yet not as much. I can now see more clearly if a friendship feels right or not, without judgement. I'm getting really good at boundaries. I'm finding the balance between play and work. I trust my intuition. I have more clarity about why I'm on this planet and I'm really excited about what's coming.

You mean the world to me. Literally. Without you I'd have no one to share with and that would be sad. You give me a reason to celebrate. Maybe after reading this, you might be inspired to slip off your shoes and dance with me.

Difference Between Gold Filled and Gold Plated

I get asked a lot about the difference between gold filled and gold plated (or more fancily stated gold vermeil) so I decided to use this blog to clear up any confusion!

I use only  gold filled wire and chain in ALL my work, exceptions include sterling silver and solid 14k. There are times when I will use a component that is laced in 24k gold plated, and if so I will clearly state it in the description.

I found this wonderful article describing the difference between the two which I will share with you:

What Does Gold-Plated Mean?
If you have ever purchased jewelry in the past, you may have seen the term gold-plated. Also called gold-plate, this is a method of covering another type of metal with a very thin, almost microscopic, film of pure gold by electroplating it. Some businesses refer to gold-plated jewelry as gold-overlay; however, these are essentially the same things.

Among the biggest benefits of gold-plated items is the fact that it is fairly strong. Gold is a soft metal, and it is easily susceptible to nicks, dents, and bending. Gold-plating can lend an attractive finish to a piece that must be sturdy and durable. The downside is that the gold finish on gold-plated items can begin to chip and wear away over time. Additionally, some items may be prone to tarnishing.

What Does Gold-Filled Mean?
Gold-filled jewelry is much more valuable than gold-plated. In fact, there is almost 100 percent more gold in gold-filled items than is found in gold-plated items. Just as gold-plated jewelry is plated with gold, gold-filled jewelry is as well, but there is a big difference between the ways these products are made.

Gold-filled items have a much thicker layer of gold on them, and the gold is a much higher quality. In fact, it is just a step down from solid gold when it comes to quality and value. Speaking of solid gold, pure gold is very soft and is not a good choice for jewelry; that is why an alloy is almost always used for gold jewelry items, even in jewelry pieces worth an incredible amount of money.

Gold-filled items also use a gold alloy, which can be very strong depending on the karat of the gold that is used. Remember that the lower karats of gold tend to be a bit stronger, 14 karat gold being an example. A higher karat of gold indicates a higher purity, and while that means the gold piece itself is more valuable, the metal will be a little softer. As a frame of reference, keep in mind that 24 karat gold is pure gold and, thus, the softest form of gold available. Buyers who are looking for a more durable jewelry piece may want to opt for a lower karat.

You won't need to worry about gold-filled jewelry tarnishing, and even if you have an allergy to certain metals, you won't have to worry about allergies from metals such as nickel. You can't say the same about gold-plated jewelry.

And a wonderful way to keep your gold filled piece looking new is to occasionally soak it in mild soapy water for about a half hour (do not include the stone, especially selenite!) and then simply use a paper towel or a soft cloth to wipe it clean.

Why I changed my name

This is how my brain works : sometimes the most glaringly obvious thing can be placed before me and it goes over my head. And usually it has to do with words. I can't think of an example at the moment so I'll quickly jump to my new name: Gemma( soft g sounds like Emma ). Some people assume it's a marketing name as in oh cool I get it- gem ma. People, this never occurred to me.

I simply loved the name when I first heard it years ago and never thought in this  lifetime  that I would have the courage to call it my own.

Let me start from the beginning . My parents named me Veronica at birth which I think is a beautiful name- for someone else:) Throughout  my childhood my friends called me V which I liked a lot more, but let's face it - V is not a name:)

And with people I would first meet I can not tell you how often they would remember me as Victoria or Vanessa - so much so that I began to answer to both of these names without flinching.

So I searched for a new name . On a spiritual retreat in Bali a few years ago someone suggested Sophia. Again a beautiful name and yet not me.

I decided to drop it and find a way to accept my name until one fateful day at the supermarket - the friendly checkout girl said to me: I'm sorry I keep forgetting your name - you just don't seem like a Veronica! And just like that my mission to find my name caught on fire once again- this time blazing.

I came back to the store with a couple different names and each time she would shake her head no until I said "Gemma" Yes! That's it- your a Gemma !

I know what you're thinking: that it's perhaps strange I would trust a friendly stranger with validating my name- one of the most personal things about me... And yet it was sharing the name with my closest friends that really sealed the deal- people who have known me for over twenty years were like of course you are a Gemma ! It took my husband time to adjust from calling me "Gorgeous"( he had always said Veronica never felt right) to now calling me Gemma.  Now of course I'm kind of missing "Gorgeous" but that's a whole other story.

Back to how my brain works. This is the part of my name story that I find most interesting for it's glaringly obvious detail: A wise meditation teacher asked me the meaning of Gemma and I told him I didn't know. I then googled it and discovered it is Italian ( hello I'm half Italian!) and means precious stone.

So there you have it:)

Sleeping with my "magic rocks"

I have a confession: These days I'm sleeping with a gemstone named Black Tourmaline.

BT makes for a wonderful grounding companion for those nights I feel a little restless and offers heavenly protection against negative energy ( your own and anyone else's ).

I clutch my beautiful chunk of tourmaline in my hand and usually wake up with it still in my palm, blazing hot. The heat tells you that the exchange of energy is real. Healing is occurring .

Sometimes I sleep with it under my pillow; it's known to purify any energy you've picked up from the day.  Ahh relief when you feel a little slimed from city life:)

I also cheat  on BT with Selenite on those nights when my mind is over active and needs calming.  It helps with  stress related headaches especially when accompanied with deep breathing.  Simply lie down and place it on your head where there's tension and take about ten deep breaths for instant relief.

The list is endless when it comes to the varieties of gemstones and how they can help you while you sleep( or just when you need them).  And I would like to make them available for you!

Soon, I will have these magic healing tools on my website drenched with personal blessings  for you to slip into your pocket ( or bra- been there!) and /or under your pillow.

I've been told that some of you actually sleep in my jewelry, which I think is great:) . And for others getting a "Magic Rock" may be just what you needed.

Sign my mailing list if you haven't already - you will get first dibs on these powerful beauties!

Lots  of love,

Gemma Rose
